Size Guide

Ndop is a traditional and ritual Bamileke fabric, composed of a series of strips of cotton sewn together, displaying white geometric patterns on an indigo blue background. These patterns, whether they represent geometric shapes, animals, stars, or even the sun, carry deep symbolic meaning, making Ndop a ritual garment associated with secret societies. Thus, the wearing of Ndop is of great importance and is not trivial.

In Cameroon, this fabric has particular meaning as a funerary ornament, used during periods of mourning and traditional ceremonies.

In this work, Ly Dumas explores the history of the manufacturing of this fabric and highlights its symbolic and aesthetic value. In addition, specialists such as Louis Perrois, Jean-Paul Notué, Hélène Joubert, Arthur Caumes, Bettina von Lintig, Francine Vormese, contribute to providing complete insight into its evolution and contemporary use.

The work raises many questions regarding the mythical and mysterious shapes and designs that adorn Ndop fabrics.
